S18-Lancastrian Livery Badge

The ostrich feather and crown was one of the badges used by the Lancastrians during the ‘Wars of the Roses’ in the second half of the 15th century.

An often repeated story tells how the ostrich feather was adopted by Edward the Black Prince after the battle of Crecy in honour of the fallen King John of Bohemia. This story has no foundation however and it is likely that the badge was adopted in respect of Phillipa of Hainault, Edward III’s Queen and mother of the Black Prince. The badge seems to have been a Hainault royal badge and was also used by other family members, including Phillipa of Hainault herself.

15th Century.
